Color Tools and Palettes

Color shapes first impressions, affects readability, and helps a design feel cohesive. Thoughtful color planning from the beginning helps create a design that translates more smoothly from screen to print.

Small shifts in color are a normal part of the printing process. Since we do not offer color matching, approaching color with flexibility and realistic expectations is important.

Tools for Success

Resources like Design by Laney’s Printable Palette can help make color planning feel more structured and predictable.

These tools are best used as a reference, not an exact guarantee of printed color.

Final color can still vary depending on:

  • Paper type - Different paper stocks absorb ink differently, which can slightly shift how colors appear once printed.
  • Production methods - Small variations in printing processes and equipment can influence how color is rendered from one order to another.
  • Lighting conditions - Color can appear different depending on lighting, such as natural daylight versus indoor lighting, which may affect how the final product is perceived.

Using color tools with realistic expectations helps create a smoother design process.

Color Matching with Envelopes

Trying to match colors between envelopes and cards can be tempting, but it is very difficult to achieve.

Envelopes and printed cards are produced on different machines, which means slight variation is completely normal, even when the same color values are used.

A better approach is to choose tones that complement each other rather than trying to create an exact match.

Place a Test Order

A sample or proof order is the best way to preview how your colors will print on your selected paper and product.

This allows you to:

  • Review color before placing a full order
  • See how paper affects your design
  • Make adjustments if needed

Testing your design ahead of time is the most reliable way to avoid surprises.
